AFIDFF Empowers over 100 Sukur indigenes in various entrepreneurial skills

AFIDFF Empowers over 100 Sukur indigenes in various entrepreneurial skills through the Sukur Restoration and Empowerment Program (SUREP) with support from North- East Development Commission (NEDC)

Sequel to the UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers Initiative Action camp implemented by AFIDFF and other stakeholders in August 2021 towards achieving the Restoration of the Sukur Cultural landscape to its' glory and empowerment of the Sakun people to improve their livelihood, The African International Documentary Festival Foundation (AFIDFF) with funding from the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) implemented the Sukur Restoration and Empowerment Project (SUREP).

A project which was geared towards restoring the landscape and improving the indigene's livelihood was held from the 23rd to 29th May 2022 in the Sukur Kingdom, Madagali LGA, Adamawa State, Nigeria, and included the Renovation of Eco-Lodges, renovation of the Gallery, the stone walls in the Hidi's palace, the Stone pathways, building of a modern Pottery workshop and iron smelting furnace. the Foundation also renovated the Dilapidated Primary school on the hilltop, provided a library, and donated books and learning resources for the library and school use. Ventilated improved latrines were also built for the school as well as the installation of solar-powered light for the school in the community that has been without access to electricity for over 600 years and the installation of a solar-powered water pump and overhead tank to provide access to clean portable drinking water.

The Project also included the empowerment of over 100 indigenes of Sukur in different skills including, Fashion design/Tailoring, Traditional weaving, Tye and Dye, Iron Smelting, Ceramics and Pottery, and Arts and Crafts, Soap and Pomade making amongst others. This project has further provided Succor to the Kingdom and AFIDFF remains committed to the Restoration of the Cultural Landscape, making Sukur a Tourist attraction, and promoting Cultural Heritage around Africa.
