EAST AFRICA CULTURE AND HERITAGE IN MOTION THE EAST AFRICAN FILM COMPETITION 2022

AFRICA INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FILM FOUNDATION (AFIDFF) representative in East Africa, engaged young filmmakers to make short films about their local culture and heritage stories.

The project started with a focus on Kenya where the engagement has brought young Kenyan filmmakers from different counties to tell a story about their local culture and heritage film (documentary or fiction).

A different short documentary has been made and raised awareness of other historical and cultural areas in different parts of Kenya that need to be kept and preserved.

Objectives

• Engage young filmmakers to tell local cultural and heritage stories so they can be the first to promote and preserve African culture and heritage for the next generation
• To raise awareness of forgotten or unrecognised heritage and cultural sites for promotion and preservation
• To document and publish East African heritage and culture for tourism
• To bring stakeholders in the industry together and structure a new framework for the development of great East African documentaries that will promote tourism, arts, culture, and craft in the region.

The films that have been made, have been judged and directors received certificates to recognize their efforts and encourage them to keep their commitment to producing more about heritage and culture preservation as they are parts of the AFIDFF program in future

The following are the top three films: 

1. Dear Diary, Director: Eastmond Mwenda (1st PLACE)
2. Kit Mikayi, Director: Josh Omondi (2nd PLACE)
3. Steps of Kindred, Director: Reiner Njoroge (3rd  PLACE)
