African Storyteller of the week

Teniola Zara King - African Storyteller of The Week

You’re probably wondering who Teniola Zara King is and what she must have done to be our top storyteller this week.  In this post, you will find out not only who she is but also why she is such a gem to us and the African film industry as a whole.

What makes Teniola, Teniola?

Teniola is a British-born Nigerian film director and writer. She is branded ‘One To Watch” by Islander and has proven that she isn’t afraid to share her stories whether it be through her scripts or films.  Throughout her career, Teniola has done an excellent job of conveying her message to her audience and participating in ensuring that her works uplift other filmmakers like her.

Teniola realized her passion for writing and directing when she worked as a Line Producer on Africa’s first late-night talk show, "Highlights with IK", so it comes as no surprise why she is phenomenal.

She graduated from London Film School with a Masters in Filmmaking and has gone ahead to create many works that are reflective of her expertise. She has produced and directed several films and documentaries; some of which include Gidi High Life (2019), Teju’s Tale (2021);  Unearthed Narratives (2022); Head over Heels; and many more.

According to Miss Zara King, Teju’s tale is a depiction of her experiences as a Nigerian trying to navigate in a foreign land.

Why is Teniola outstanding to us?

We asked her what her inspiration for storytelling is and her response was phenomenal. She said: “For me, storytelling is a beautiful medium to transport someone from the comfort of their seats to another person’s world, reality, time period, culture, or human experience. I think it brings us closer as humans as for a moment (even though it’s a brief one) you can experience the world through someone else’s eyes.”

The idea of turning a concept into a reality and eliciting an emotional response from the audience amazes her. So, due to this reason, she has decided to ensure that the Nigerian cinema culture continues to develop.

Teniola’s motives correspond with AFIDFF’s goals of promoting young storytellers to global prominence and showcasing Africa’s heritage, and this is the reason we adore her.

Now that you are aware of who Teniola Zara King is, do you agree with our standpoint on her?
