AFIDFF, NEDC, AUN and NTDC Support Education and Digital Learning for 700 Pupils at Sukur Cultural Landscape

The African International Documentary Festival Foundation (AFIDFF), with funding from the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and support from the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, implemented education-focused interventions during the 2022 UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) initiative at the Sukur Cultural Landscape in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

A key component of the intervention was support for the Gen. Paul Tarfa Community Library and Computer Centre, established to promote literacy, access to educational resources, digital learning and technology skills among children and young people in the Sukur community.

The initiative also benefited from computers donated by the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDC), strengthening the centre’s capacity to support digital education and expand access to computer-based learning for pupils in the community.

The intervention targeted approximately 700 pupils of Jira Primary School and Junior Secondary School, providing educational and digital learning opportunities to support their academic development and improve access to technology in the rural heritage community.

As part of the programme, the facility and its associated community education resources were formally handed over to Sukur Community Development and the traditional institution by the Director-General of AFIDFF, Malame Ngamariju Mangzha, alongside representatives of partner agencies present. The handover highlighted the importance of community ownership and local participation in sustaining educational infrastructure and ensuring that the benefits of the intervention continue beyond the volunteer action camp.

The collaboration reflected a shared commitment to connecting cultural heritage preservation with education, youth development and community empowerment. By supporting learning facilities and access to digital tools, the partners sought to help young people build the knowledge and skills needed to participate more fully in an increasingly digital world.

The intervention also demonstrated how heritage conservation initiatives can contribute to wider community development by linking the protection of cultural landscapes with practical investments in education and human capacity.

AFIDFF continues to promote documentary filmmaking, cultural heritage preservation, environmental sustainability, education, youth empowerment and community development through partnerships with public institutions, educational organisations, traditional authorities and development agencies.

The 2022 initiative at Sukur remains an example of collaborative efforts to strengthen education and digital inclusion while supporting the long-term development of communities living within and around important heritage sites.
