African Storyteller of the week

Collins Nkem

This month, we’re excited to spotlight Collins Nkem, a storyteller whose work continues to stand out within both the African and global storytelling landscape.

What makes Collins, Collins?

Collins Nkem is a Nigerian filmmaker, travel creator, and documentary storyteller whose work is rooted in capturing real, unfiltered human experiences across the world. Known for his cinematic visuals and deeply grounded storytelling style, Collins goes beyond simply showcasing places, he tells stories that reveal the people, cultures, and realities within them.

Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Collins grew up surrounded by diversity, contrast, and constant motion. These early experiences shaped his perspective, giving him a natural curiosity about life beyond the surface. Rather than seeing places at face value, he became interested in the deeper layers, the untold stories, struggles, and triumphs of people.

His journey into filmmaking was driven by a desire to explore the world differently. As he traveled across countries, he noticed how many places, especially in Africa, were often misunderstood or misrepresented. Instead of accepting those narratives, Collins chose to tell his own stories, stories that reflect truth, depth, and authenticity.

Today, he has traveled to over 35 countries, documenting cultures, lifestyles, and human experiences across continents, building a body of work that is both global in reach and deeply personal in impact.

Storytelling Style and Featured Works

What sets Collins apart is his ability to combine cinematic filmmaking with honest, human-centered storytelling. His work is immersive, observational, and emotionally engaging, placing viewers directly within the environments he explores.

Rather than focusing only on aesthetics, Collins highlights:

  • Untold and overlooked stories
  • Cultural depth and local perspectives
  • The contrast between perception and reality
  • Real human emotions, resilience, and lived experiences

One of his standout documentaries, I Survived the Hottest Place On Earth (Danakil Depression), reflects this approach perfectly, combining striking visuals with raw human experience in one of the most extreme environments on earth.

Another compelling piece, A Nigerian Town That Speaks FRENCH As Main Language, challenges assumptions and sheds light on lesser-known cultural realities, reinforcing his mission to reshape narratives through storytelling.

Through his lens, places are not just destinations, they are lived experiences filled with meaning, history, and identity.

Why is Collins outstanding to us?

When asked about his approach to storytelling, Collins’ work itself speaks volumes. His films consistently aim to bridge gaps in perception, challenge stereotypes, and encourage audiences to see the world more honestly.

At the core of his work is a clear vision: to tell real stories that shift how people see the world.

He creates content that:

  • Sparks curiosity
  • Encourages deeper cultural understanding
  • Inspires more conscious and respectful exploration
  • Gives visibility to stories that are often ignored

Collins’ mission aligns strongly with AFIDFF’s goal of promoting authentic African storytelling and showcasing the richness and complexity of our heritage to a global audience.

His ability to balance beauty with truth, and storytelling with impact, is exactly why we celebrate him this month.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know who Collins Nkem is, it’s clear why his work continues to resonate across borders. Through his documentaries, he reminds us that storytelling is not just about what we see, but about what we understand.
