African Storyteller of the week

Asabe Madaki

For Asabe Madaki, storytelling is more than performance—it is a platform for advocacy, a bridge for understanding, and a catalyst for social transformation.

Who is Asabe Madaki?

An actress, filmmaker, and humanitarian from Northern Nigeria, Asabe has built a reputation for bringing depth, authenticity, and social relevance to the stories she chooses to tell. Whether on screen or behind the scenes, her work consistently reflects a commitment to amplifying voices that are often unheard and highlighting issues that shape the realities of communities across Africa.

Her breakthrough performance in Voiceless (Make Room) drew widespread attention for its emotional portrayal of the experiences of girls affected by insecurity in Northern Nigeria. The role not only earned critical recognition but also established her as one of a new generation of storytellers using film to engage with real social issues. Rather than viewing cinema solely as entertainment, Asabe sees storytelling as a powerful medium for awareness, empathy, and action.

This philosophy is evident throughout her body of work. From the historical world of Amina to the social commentary of Almajiri, the high-stakes drama of The Black Book, and the emotional themes explored in Nanjala, she has consistently gravitated toward stories that challenge perceptions, provoke conversations, and inspire reflection.

As a filmmaker, Asabe is particularly interested in narratives that explore resilience, justice, identity, and the strength of communities. Her directorial work, including the short film The Last Call, reflects her desire to create stories that leave audiences with questions, insights, and a deeper understanding of the human experience.

Beyond acting and directing, she is passionate about nurturing the next generation of African storytellers. Through mentorship and media development initiatives, she supports emerging creatives in filmmaking, photography, and content creation through her organisation, Skylenz Academy, helping to expand opportunities within Northern Nigeria's growing creative industry.

Asabe believes that African stories deserve to be told by Africans, through authentic perspectives that reflect the continent's diversity, culture, challenges, and aspirations. For her, representation is not simply about visibility—it is about ownership of narratives and preserving the richness of African experiences for future generations.

Her unique journey across law, humanitarian leadership, and filmmaking has shaped a storytelling approach grounded in empathy, justice, and social responsibility. These experiences continue to influence the characters she portrays and the stories she seeks to bring to life.

Today, Asabe Madaki stands among a growing community of African creatives who are redefining how stories from the continent are told and received. Through her work, she continues to demonstrate that storytelling can entertain, educate, empower, and inspire change—one story at a time.
