AFIDFF Receives 2025 UNESCO Global Award for World Heritage Education Innovation

The African International Documentary Festival Foundation (AFIDFF) is deeply honored to announce its selection as a recipient of the 2025 Global Award for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases (AWHIEC), jointly presented by UNESCO and WHITRAP.

The award was unveiled during a special side event at the 47th Session of UNESCO in Paris.

AFIDFF was recognized as the only African organization to receive the prestigious award this year, for its groundbreaking initiative: The C.H.A.N.G.E. Sukur Project (Creating Heritage Awareness through New Generations and Education). Launched in 2021 at the Sukur Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Adamawa State, Nigeria, the project represents a pioneering, education-driven approach to heritage conservation. It blends storytelling, arts, documentary filmmaking, digital literacy, and environmental science to empower young people, particularly in underserved and remote mountain communities.

This global recognition is dedicated to the resilient people of Sukur, whose deep-rooted heritage, strength, and cooperation have made this achievement possible,” said Malame Mangzha, Director General of AFIDFF. We also extend heartfelt thanks to our committed partners, the passionate AFIDFF team, and everyone who has contributed to this transformative journey over the last five years. This is a collective victory.

The C.H.A.N.G.E. Sukur Project reflects AFIDFF’s broader mission to redefine heritage education through inclusive, community-based models that speak to the next generation of African leaders. The initiative also aligns with global goals for sustainability, cultural resilience, and innovation in learning.

As the foundation continues to expand its impact, AFIDFF reaffirms its commitment to advancing heritage education, cultural preservation, and youth empowerment across Africa, one story, one community, and one generation at a time.
