UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers Initiative 2024 Implementing Committee Visit’s Taraba State Governor

 

On Friday, August 9th, 2024, the Implementing Committee for the UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers Initiative 2024, led by Dr. Ibrahim Goni, Conservator General of the National Park Service, paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Taraba State, H.E. Agbu Kefas.

The purpose of the visit was to brief Governor Kefas on the upcoming UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers program scheduled for September 17th to 27th, 2024, at Gashaka Gumti National Park and the Mambila Plateau.

During the visit, Dr. Goni underscored the significance of the program in enhancing conservation efforts and protecting the natural and cultural heritage of Gashaka Gumti National Park. Ms. Malame Mangzha, Director General of AFIDFF, emphasized the program's role in involving young people in the protection and preservation of the site, while also empowering local communities through education, training, and conservation activities. She further highlighted the importance of raising awareness to support the park's elevation to UNESCO World Heritage status.

Governor Kefas expressed strong support for the initiative, recognizing its potential to drive sustainable development in the region. He officially launched the project by unveiling the WHV 2024 shirt for Gashaka Gumti National Park and the Mambila Plateau. Also present at the event were the Chief of Staff to the Taraba State Governor, Mr. Jeji Williams; the Managing Director of the Taraba State Tourism Board, Ms. Christiana Useni; and Mr. Abba Gadzama, Director of Special Initiatives at AFIDFF.
