A Day at the Matrix Gallery- Open Mic Nigeria

On Wednesday, September 13, 2023, the African Intl. Documentary Festival Foundation - Africa Telling her Story (AFIDFF) officials had the pleasure of visiting the Matrix Gallery of Contemporary Art in Asokoro, Abuja. Hosted by Muhammad Sulaiman, the President of the Society of Nigerian Artists, our team embarked on a rich journey through the gallery, exploring a myriad of artistic techniques and styles.

 Sulaiman, a well-respected figure in the art community, shared insights into his own artistic process, notably the utilization of layered colors to evoke specific emotions. His admiration for Vincent Van Gogh's vibrant palette and expressive brushwork shone through his own artwork, which exhibited a palpable influence from the iconic Dutch painter.

 Beyond Sulaiman's work, the gallery tour introduced us to various art styles. Of particular note was the Mandala art, rooted in ancient Persia, which relies on intricate, symmetrical patterns set within a circular or square framework. Sulaiman also illuminated his "war of attrition" style, exemplifying how artists can engage in a sustained challenge against conventional norms.

Throughout the tour, Sulaiman emphasized the importance of contemporary art in entrepreneurship, cultural exchange, and the incubation of creative ideas. The visit was not just an exhibition but an exposition on how art can ignite conversations, question societal norms, and evoke deep-seated emotions.

The Matrix Gallery visit deepened AFIDFF’s understanding and appreciation of the role that contemporary art plays in the advancement of culture.
