2026 Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival - AFIDFF

The African International Documentary Festival Foundation (AFIDFF) proudly participated in the documentation of the 61st Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival, marking yet another remarkable celebration of African cultural heritage.

Argungu, Kebbi State, Nigeria — February 2026

Held in the historic town of Argungu, Kebbi State, this year’s festival marked a significant return of one of Africa’s most iconic cultural gatherings. The event brought together thousands of fishermen, spectators, cultural performers, and heritage enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond to the famous Matan Fada River.

The festival featured vibrant displays of traditional music, dance, wrestling, canoe races, and other cultural competitions. The highlight of the celebration remained the world-renowned fishing contest, where participants plunged into the river using age-old fishing techniques passed down through generations.

A defining moment of the festival was the outstanding 59kg catch by fisherman Abubakar Usman, earning him the top prize and drawing widespread admiration. His achievement symbolised the endurance, skill, and continuity of a tradition that has become a powerful emblem of community identity. Despite security concerns in parts of the region, the festival recorded an impressive turnout, demonstrating the deep cultural significance of the event and its role in fostering unity, preserving tradition, and contributing to local economic development.

As part of its cultural preservation mandate, AFIDFF deployed a media documentation team to capture the festival’s activities as part of its ongoing commitment to safeguarding African cultural heritage through documentary film and visual storytelling. The team documented key moments from the festival, focusing on the human stories, cultural expressions, and community participation that define the significance of the Argungu Festival.

AFIDFF expressed its sincere appreciation to the festival organizers, the Kebbi State Government, and the people of Argungu for granting the Foundation the opportunity to participate and document the event.

“We are deeply honoured to have been welcomed to document the Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival. Through the lens of our cameras, we witnessed more than a fishing competition; we witnessed identity, pride, and living heritage. We thank the organizers and the people of Kebbi State for allowing AFIDFF to contribute to preserving these important cultural narratives,” the Foundation stated.

The Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival remains one of Africa’s most enduring cultural events and continues to serve as a powerful symbol of tradition, resilience, and community pride.

AFIDFF’s documentation of the 2026 festival forms part of its broader mission to preserve and amplify African heritage through documentary storytelling, ensuring that these cultural narratives remain accessible to future generations.
