AFIDFF Marks Africa Day 2026 with Youth Capacity Building, Strategic Partnerships, and Launch of “Lens-On Africa” Project

As Africans across the continent and in the diaspora commemorate Africa Day 2026, the African International Documentary Festival Foundation (AFIDFF) joined stakeholders in celebrating the occasion through meaningful engagements focused on youth empowerment, cultural development, and storytelling.

Africa Day, observed annually on May 25, commemorates the historic formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1963. The institution, now known as the African Union (AU), was established to advance African unity, support liberation movements, and promote the continent’s collective development.

Speaking on the significance of the day, AFIDFF noted that Africa Day is more than a celebration; it is a reminder of Africa’s resilience, identity, freedom, cultural heritage, and shared destiny.

To mark the occasion, Africa Day 2026 commenced with a capacity-building training for African youths facilitated by Afreximbank, organized by the Afro Caribbean Chamber of Culture and Tourism, and supported by AFIDFF. The programme brought together young Africans to explore opportunities in creativity, culture, entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable development, while equipping participants with the knowledge and skills relevant to the continent's future.

The celebration also featured a strategic dinner that convened key stakeholders, creatives, cultural leaders, policymakers, and development partners. The gathering provided a platform for dialogue and collaboration to strengthen Africa’s creative and cultural industries and foster partnerships that drive inclusive growth across the continent.

A major highlight of the event was the official launch of the “Lens-On Africa” Project, a Pan-African initiative of AFIDFF designed to document Africa’s heritage, people, environment, creativity, innovations, and untold stories through documentary filmmaking, photography, and digital storytelling.

According to AFIDFF, the project seeks to amplify authentic African narratives and ensure that Africans continue to tell their own stories from their own perspectives.

“Africa’s greatest strength is not only in its vast natural resources but in its people, cultures, stories, creativity, and youthful energy. As a continent, we must continue to preserve, document, and share our stories through African voices for global audiences,” the Foundation stated.

AFIDFF reaffirmed its commitment to promoting documentary filmmaking, cultural preservation, youth engagement, and creative excellence as tools for social development and continental integration.

As Africa celebrates another milestone in its journey, AFIDFF calls on governments, institutions, development partners, creatives, and young people across the continent to embrace collaboration and storytelling as powerful instruments for shaping Africa’s future.

Happy Africa Day 2026.
