AFIDFF Features At The UNWTO Global Conference On Linking Tourism, Culture And The Creative Industries: Pathways To Recovery And Development

The African International Documentary Festival Foundation has featured at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Global Conference on Linking Tourism Culture and The Creative Industries held from 14th -16th November 2022 at the National Art Theatre Iganmu Lagos. The 3-day event hosted leaders from across African countries with the idea to bridge the gap between two areas through a strategic partnership with affiliate members such as Netflix. 

Speaking during the expert workshop on Tourism and Culture, the Director General African International Documentary Festival Foundation (AFIDFF), Malame Mangzha delivered a paper presentation on Promoting Sustainable Tourism through the Safeguarding of intangible cultural Heritage with a Case Study of Sukur Cultural Landscape (Africa's first Listed UNESCO Cultural Landscape and Nigeria's first UNESCO World Heritage Site) Mrs. Malame stressed the need to restore, preserve and provide more visibility to the Sukur Cultural Landscape to the world as a tourist destination. The presentation also identified areas AFIDFF and partners have worked in the past two years in the restoration and economic intervention.

Also at the opening ceremony the UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili told delegates that the fortunes of tourism and culture are closely linked and urged both the public and private sectors to implement plans to employ the power of Culture and tourism to create jobs and business opportunities to drive inclusive development in Nigeria and across Africa.

Vice president of Nigeria Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo in his remark said ' our desire to diversify our economy and explore other sustainable sources of revenue has led us to rank Tourism, Culture, and the creative sector among the priority sectors of the economy. Specifically, tourism has been recognized for its resilience and dynamism. He went further to sight examples of Nigerian artists supporting the creative industries while trilling the guest with a rendition of Asake’s song ‘Organize’ and Kizz Daniel’s ‘Buga.’

The Minister of Information and Culture Nigeria Lai Mohammed also said "Today, more than ever, tourism and the creative industry, due to their economic viability are at the global forefront of national and international development agenda.

The conference also explored various objectives involving a panel section, policymakers, PR actioners, humanitarians, and stakeholders to discuss the linkage and opportunities between Cultural tourism and the creative industries. This session was used to identify investment avenues and financial resources to boost the recovery of tourism.

The event also featured a presentation of the culinary talent of different countries and the display of locally made products from the Sukur kingdom. Highlights of the event were the presentation of a certificate to the Director General AFIDFF Malame Mangzha by the Secretary-General United Nations World Tourism Organization Zurab Pololikashvili and the Minister of Information Lai Mohammed for her commitment and contribution in the promotion of Culture and the creative industries in Nigeria and Africa.
