The revival of the Nwonyo International Cultural and Fishing Festival after 14-years marks a significant moment for Taraba State, showcasing its commitment to preserving and celebrating its cultural heritage.)
The festival was declared open by the executive Governor of Taraba State, His Excellency Agbu Kefas where he emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting Taraba State's cultural heritage.
Government officials, community/traditional leaders, and cultural ambassadors graced the occasion to add colour to the event and express their support for the celebration of local traditions.
The African International Documentary Festival Foundation (AFIDFF was honoured to document the two-day festival held on April 19th and 20th, 2024. One of the main highlights of the festival was the fishing competition, where skilled fishermen demonstrated their prowess in traditional fishing techniques. The competition not only entertained spectators but also served as a platform to raise awareness about sustainable fishing practices and environmental conservation.
The Nwonyo Fishing and Cultural Festival, boasting a rich history of over 90 years, is renowned as one of the oldest of its kind in Africa. Its name, "Nwonyo," signifies a hide-out for huge and dangerous aquatic animals, adding to the mystique and allure of the event.
The festival drew diverse crowds, with attendees coming from various regions. Dignitaries from across Nigeria honored the event with their presence, notably including Retired General T. Y. Danjuma (Abonta Kwararafa), the former Nigerian Minister of Defence, who served as the chairman. Other distinguished guests were H.E Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, the Governor of Adamawa State, H.E Mr. Samuel Ode, the Deputy Governor of Benue State, as well as members of both the state and National Assembly. Additionally, representatives from diplomatic missions and international organizations added to the prestigious gathering.
The festival featured colorful parades, traditional dances, music performances, and thrilling fishing competitions. It provided a unique platform for local artisans and craftsmen to exhibit their talents through displays of traditional crafts, textiles, and culinary arts. Captivating cultural displays, thrilling swimming competitions and exhilarating boat regattas.
Mal. Hutu Yakubu emerged victorious during the fishing competition, clinching first place with the biggest catch weighing 170 kilograms following closely behind; Yusuf Abubakar secured second place with a catch weighing 150 kilograms, while Ismaila Yakubu claimed third place with a catch weighing 120 kilograms.
The presence of the African International Documentary Festival Foundation added a significant dimension to the festival. AFIDFF documented the event, capturing the essence of the cultural performances, fishing competitions, and the spirit of the festival.
