AFIDFF Reports on UNESCO WHV 2024: A Journey of Conservation, Heritage and Hope

The African International Documentary Festival Foundation (AFIDFF) has officially presented the UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) 2024 Report for Gashaka Gumti National Park and Sukur Cultural Landscape to the Conservator General of the National Park Service, Dr. Ibrahim Musa Goni. Dr. Goni, who also serves as the Chairman of the WHV Implementing Committee, received the report in the presence of 17 partner organizations and a representative from the Taraba State Government.

The event, which marked a key milestone in the WHV 2024 campaign, featured an exclusive screening of the WHV 2024 project documentary, offering a glimpse into the initiative’s impact. From biodiversity monitoring and cultural heritage preservation to youth mentorship and community engagement, the documentary highlighted the collective efforts that made this program a success.

Key Highlights of the WHV 2024 Report

The comprehensive report offers an in-depth analysis of the project's challenges, successes, and key lessons learned. It emphasizes the importance of:

  • Sustained funding and support for conservation initiatives
  • Stronger multi-sectoral collaborations between government agencies, conservation bodies, and local communities
  • Policy-driven actions to strengthen heritage protection frameworks
  • Increased youth involvement in conservation through mentorship and capacity-building programs

Notably, the report also includes the inception report advocating for Gashaka Gumti National Park’s nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This crucial step, if achieved, will elevate the park’s status, attracting global recognition and enhanced conservation efforts.

The success of the WHV 2024 initiative highlights the power of collaboration. AFIDFF extends its deepest appreciation to the National Park Service, our dedicated implementing partners, and the Taraba State Government for their commitment to protecting Nigeria’s cultural and natural heritage.

At AFIDFF, we remain steadfast in our mission to drive impactful conservation initiatives, amplify the voices of young environmental leaders, and advocate for the preservation of our heritage for future generations. The dedication of all stakeholders continues to inspire us, and we are more determined than ever to build on this momentum.
