AFIDFF Equips Media Professionals with Income-Driven Documentary Storytelling Skills.

May 16th 2025 ABUJA
The African International Documentary Festival Foundation (AFIDFF), in partnership with World Changers Media International Foundation, has concluded a dynamic and transformative media  training workshop in Abuja, Nigeria. Themed
“Mastering the Art of Documentary: Storytelling  for Impact and Income,” the workshop aimed to empower media professionals with the tools and  expertise to craft powerful, socially relevant, and financially sustainable documentary content.

Led by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and AFIDFF co-founder Dr. Janice Marie-Collins, the  intensive training brought together journalists, filmmakers, and cultural custodians from across  Nigeria. Participants engaged in a hands-on exploration of storytelling techniques designed to  amplify African voices, preserve cultural heritage, and open income-generating opportunities  within the global creative economy.

Documentary storytelling is more than an art it is a powerful bridge,” said Dr. Collins. “It connects  communities, generations, and institutions. Through initiatives like this, we are cultivating a new  generation of African storytellers who will present their truths with authenticity, purpose, and  global resonance,” she reiterated.

Attendees represented a wide spectrum of Nigerian institutions, including the National Parks Service, the National Council for Arts and Culture, the National Commission for Museums and  Monuments, the National Troupe of Nigeria, National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Voice of HAM from Southern Kaduna, and  representatives from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of SUKUR.

United by a commitment to cultural expression and social impact, participants explored  documentary storytelling as a catalyst for national development and cultural diplomacy. The  workshop highlighted the dual potential of documentaries to both safeguard Africa’s rich heritage  and serve as a source of economic empowerment.

AFIDFF’s initiative reflects its broader mission to build documentary storytelling capacity across  the continent and to promote narratives that honor Africa’s diverse identities, histories, and lived  experiences.
